About this place
Askeberga skeppssättning is an Iron Age ship-setting — a burial monument built from large standing stones arranged in the outline of a Viking ship. It lies on a ridge in the landscape of Västergötland, overlooking the surrounding countryside, positioned as if about to sail into the horizon.
Ship-settings like this were constructed across Scandinavia during the Iron Age, marking the graves of people of significance. Who is buried here, and what they carried with them into death, is no longer known — but the stones have held their shape for over a thousand years.
The experience
Stoneship was our first experiment with the Echoscape framework running on a visitor's own device — a quiet trial that laid the groundwork for the two prototypes produced later that year for Att Bryta Ljud 2025. The audio was recorded on location by Leif Ahnland.
The piece frames the site as a concept art space: Tidandalens konsthall, a gallery that exists only in sound. From the centre of the ship setting, two landmarks in the surrounding landscape are offered as artworks in their own right — the ship itself, and a grain silo rising on the northeast horizon. It is a deliberate reversal of the ready-made: instead of bringing an everyday object into a gallery, the gallery is built around the landscape you are already standing in.
This was created as a one-day experimental demo ahead of Att Bryta Ljud 2025. It is deliberately spare — four audio pieces, no branching narrative. Allow around 20–30 minutes, and bring patience.
How to use
Make your way to Askeberga skeppssättning. Open in Google Maps →
Open this page in your mobile browser, then tap "Start Experience" below. Keep the browser open while you walk.
When prompted, allow the browser to access your location. This is required for the GPS system to work.
Follow the audio as you move among the stones — step into marked zones to unlock narration. Explore at your own pace; there is no timer and no wrong direction. (This experience was designed alongside physical frames installed during Att Bryta Ljud. If you visit independently, the installation may not be present — but you can still access all audio content via the interactive map points.)
You will need to be at Askeberga skeppssättning for the experience to work.
