About this place
Skara is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Sweden, founded in the Viking Age and a centre of ecclesiastical and civic power throughout the medieval period. Its Romanesque cathedral — one of the oldest in Scandinavia — still stands at the heart of a city whose streets have been walked for over a thousand years.
This experience was developed as part of a research project in collaboration with Västergötland Museum in Skara. The museum provided historical expertise and content, and the game was tested by museum staff, local residents, and game students — receiving strong feedback on both the historical learning and the game experience itself.
The experience
The game uses a dual narrative structure. A narrator guides you through the city and provides context about its history — but you also play a role: a mysterious time traveller with one simple task, helping a medieval girl search for her lost cat. Along the way, you overhear the everyday conversations and customs of medieval soldiers, monks, and the poor, and witness key historical events including the rebuilding of the cathedral.
This is a "choose your own adventure" experience. At certain moments, you are given a choice — and the path you take determines which stories you hear. The full experience takes around 25–35 minutes. You can play multiple times and hear different endings.
How to use
Make your way to central Skara — the area around the cathedral is a good starting point. Open in Google Maps →
Open this page in your mobile browser, then tap "Start Experience" below. Keep the browser open while you walk.
When prompted, allow the browser to access your location. This is required for the GPS system to work.
Follow the audio as you move through the city — step into marked zones to unlock narration and branching choices. Tap your choice when prompted; each path reveals different stories. (You can put your phone in your pocket between zones — no need to keep looking at the screen.)
You will need to be in Skara for the experience to work.
